In postwar Germany, a young man's decades-long obsession with an older woman runs headlong into a war crimes trial, where he learns an awful truth.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

An excellent film which is quintessentially a powerful love story set in post-war Germany between a woman and a young (very young!) man. Their affair ends abruptly but their lives join once more many years later under very different circumstances.

This film is very thought provoking and the viewpoint of the older vs younger generation on the atrocitites that happened during the war is very noticeable.

I really enjoyed this film and thought about it long after viewing. Well worth watching.

Kate Winslet gives a good performance in this film but I would recommend reading Bernhard Schlink's book instead. Maybe watch this film afterwards.

Love story about former SS Guard (Kate Winslet) and young boy lover. About the morality of only obeying orders The Winslet character working in a lowly role cannot see that she was doing anything wrong beyond doing her job but becomes a high profile scapegoat and a public example and is made to take the blame for Nazi atrocitiesin a war crimes trial. A great and deep film.

  • The Reader Seems Very Fictional

Are we supposed to understand with sympathy the motives and choices a person makes because of a deficient education? If so, this film is hardly convincing. Nor is the romance convincing: how an adolescent continues to be infatuated by an older woman who has used him in the past is stretching credulity; and then the obssessive tape producing is ridculously far-fetched. Admirable acting from Kate Winslett, though and Fiennes makes the most of a withdrawn character.

What a powerful, moving, tear jerking, couldn't stop watching movie. Great performances and excellent casting. I believed in the characters and so much wanted a happy ending - did I get one? You'll have to watch and find out!

Without getting into the whole debate about what happened in Nazis German concentration camps, I found ‘The Reader’ heart-warming, sensitive, and thought-provoking and captivating. The cinematography was superb; the main characters brought warmth and a touch of innocence to the story. The Reader is worth watching, because watching it I found myself almost becoming entwined with the characters and their emotions.
