    [Highly rated reviewer]

in an era where a countrys' first line of defence ,intelligence is most important, comes an explosive thriller staring al pacino and colin farrell.James clayton(farell) might not have the attitude of a typical recruit, but he is one of the most smartest graduating seniors in the country-and he's just the person walter burke(pacino) wants in his agency.James regards the CIA's mission as an intriguing alternative to ordinary life, but before he becomes an opps officer,James has to survive the agencys secret training ground, where green recruits are moulded into seasonedc veterans.Burke teaches him the ropes and rules, james rises through the ranks and falls for layla(Moynahan),one of his fellow recruits. But just when james questions his role and his cat and mouse relationship with his mentor, burke taps him for a special assignment to root out a mole.As the suspense builds towards a gripping climax,it soon becomes clear that the CIA'S old maxims are true.'Trust no one' and 'nothing is what it seems'.

A trully outstanding film ,edge of seat action start to finnish. a must to see

  • Pacino and Farrell Down On "The Farm"

I smiled when I saw a film with Al Pacino and Colin Farell in the leading roles and for anyone who knows their movies who wouldn't. The list of fine Pacino movies is known to most viewers I am guessing but most will think of his career starting with 'God Father' rather than the earlier The Panic in Needle Park (1971) or other later gems such as Scent of a Woman and Any Given Sunday but The Recruit (2003) is another fine Pacino role. Now maybe if you have seen some of Farrell's more recent stuff you'd have been expecting a typical Hollywood 'star boy' performance but actually Farrell is extremely credible in the role as the Recruit and this and his peformance in 'In Brugge' really do much to restore my faith that everything in Hollywood isn't always about box office rather than any kind of acting talent. Throw a youthful ' Bridget Moynahan ' aka Helen Reagan from Blue Bloods into the mix and you have a film that will please both the guys and girls. Yes there is even a bit where they get their kit off... Well now you have the talent what about the movie ... Well things start a little slow but start to get more interesting when the latest batch of CIA wannabees reach 'the Farm' the phrase (or me para phrasing) 'nothing is real and every thing is not what it seems' sets up the story and twist at the end perfectly. Without spoiling this movie for you give it a chance to get going don't expect a high octane thriller enjoy some good (not superb) acting and you'll have almost two hours of great entertainment.

Slightly slow to start but keep with it - it's a brilliant film. I thought there was a few bits which I guessed were coming, but unlike my partner, I didn't expect the ending! Excellent acting as you can expect by Pacino, and a professional accent change for Farrell which I think he pulled off excellently! Definitely would watch again

  • A decent thriller which could have been better

I can’t help but love watching Al Pacino act. It’s a joy, really. Like most of us, it started with ‘The Godfather’. But you have those other gems, like ‘Dog Day Afternoon’, and ‘Scent Of A Woman’, and ‘Heat’, and ‘Serpico’. I could go on. But like that other amazing Italian-American actor, Robert DeNiro, Pacino has developed the bad habit of acting in substandard films.

Which brings me onto ‘The Recruit’. Al Pacino’s in it, but we’re actually following Colin Farrell, who plays James Clayton. James is a brilliant young CIA trainee who is asked by his mentor Walter Burke – that’s Pacino – to find and stop a mole in the Agency.

It’s probably a bit harsh of me to say ‘The Recruit’ is substandard. It’s not terrible to watch, and it’s actually quite good in parts. There’s a real chemistry between Pacino and Farrell. You expect Pacino to be great (he is), but Farrell really holds his own too. You can track his improvement as an actor through his filmography, and this is more towards the better end of his performances. Not quite ‘In Bruges’, but still strong.

While the idea of CIA training and top-secret recruiting is exciting, it doesn’t quite translate into a great film. Atleast, it doesn’t translate into this film being great. It makes some for some nice first-half set pieces as the trainees are put through their paces. Once the tone of the film changes, though, it becomes less interesting, and slightly predictable.

I also really don’t believe the relationship between James and Layla (Bridget Moynahan). They seem to fall in love instantly and it doesn’t work. Bridget Moynahan doesn’t work at all, really. It could have been much better if it was a better actor. Sorry, Bridget.

Overall though, the film is decent. Not really much more than that. Some great acting, yes, but it isn’t enough here. First half promise is not lived up to in the second half, and that’s a bit of a shame.

I'm slightly biased (hope I've spelled that word correctly) as any film involving Colin Farrell I usually enjoy anyway. Action packed most of the way although the ending was a bit silly
