Great psychological horrorBy a customer from London , 14 Oct 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]Fantastic psychological drama with Freudian overtones that must have been extremely hard hitting when it came out and which still packs a punch now. Edward G Robinson plays the one-legged farmer with the guilty secret and he and other characters both sinister and innocent circle the wood and the Red House in orbits of inevitably decreasing radii that can only end in disaster. In a sense there isn't that much that happens but the film really succeeds in building the fear of the titular dwelling as it progresses, along with the madness of the farmer and the development of his peculiar relationship with his adopted daughter. Great stuff.

The Red House HorrorBy a customer , 28 Jun 2013For years I remembered watching a film which ended with a car driving into a garage and the car is swallowed up! I used to have nightmares about this as a youngster and talked about it over the years but could never remember the name of the film. Now I know and can put that shiver to bed now. Classic with EGR!
Watch it - if only for the ending.By a customer , 16 May 2012As with other viewers I found that the very poor quality print almost made it unwatchable. However, for us die-hard old movie fans it was a chance to watch the wonderful Edward G Robinson who did not disappoint. He is a wonderful actor, whatever the quality of the script (and the print). Towards the middle the movie the story became a bit predictable but it was worth watching just for the memorable dénouement of Edward G. I won't spoil it for those who have yet to watch but I shan't forget that in a hurry - the stuff of nightmares !
Terrible printBy a customer , 02 May 2012The print was so degraded the dvd was unwatchable . Somebody else here recommended the online version as slightly better.
worth a watch for fans of 40's thrillers- great actingBy emmabeebop (12 reviews) , 02 Oct 2011
[Highly rated reviewer]I enjoyed this film although its slow to kick off the story this allows for stronger characterisation and realtionships to change at a slower and more realistic pace.
Julie London is excellent as a conceited demanding 17/18 year old who wants to be out of the small town etc etc and a big surprise was the acting talents of little known Allene Roberts. In my opinion Edward. G Robinson takes it a bit OTT and subtly would have helped his performance. The storyline has mystery although the reveal happens a bit too early for my liking relying on the audience's desire to hang on for the detail at the end which in itself is predictable.
great film - decayed print - shoddily transferredBy Bavster (1 review) from Winchester , 06 Apr 2011Loved this but of course the dvd is a shoddy transfer. Watch the online version - it's slightly better. Anyway, there's something out in those woods.....
