To paraphrase Neil Koch from the Hong Kong Film Net site, this film is what many movies hype themselves up as....'a roller-coaster ride!'
It really is. Geographically speaking and plot-wise, the film goes all over the map yet you have so much of a fun time experiencing it that it doesn't matter.
Whilst it may not have the innocence of the original, the film still has that spark and just that certain charm Jing brings over into his films. It certainly has the magic which Disney's self-proclaimed films lack!
The violence however is more shocking, one scene mirrors a crime event that happened in December 2004 (though it wasn't Wong's intention to emulate it as this film was made before the dreaded event). Also, people who are particularly fond of cats will despise one scene though people who dig James Bond and like parodies will get a kick out of it!
God Of Gamblers 4: The Return (the film's true title) manages to retain the balance between the aforementioned genres the original had, except it ups the ante as far as martial arts and gun play is concerned - real cracking stuff! But just like before, the maestro at the helm realizes that the quality comes first than the quantity!
The film brings a new element to the mix - the supernatural which really gives the film just more of that energy which so many sequels and films in general lack. For example, this film has some genuinely enthusiastic performances (not based on the promise of pay checks either).
This film has something for everyone, just like the original, but fans of gun play and martial arts will experience more of an adrenaline rush when they see this.
But cinematically speaking, the film is just as good even if Chow isn't as endearing as he was in the first film.
A must-see!
Not bad, decent story covered up a gambling vendetta. Chow Yun Fat is quite good in this, but he is awsome in the first God of Gamblers.
