Gory funny brilliance
By Melon from East Sussex , 25 Aug 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This was billed as an 'unofficical sequel' to Romero's trilogy when it was released but O'Bannon's punk classic is a different kettle of satirical fish. It joins the ranks of those few horrors (like 'An American Werewolf In London') that successfully manage to be both genuinely hilarious and genuinely scary.
I absolutely loved this film when I was a kid, and it still cuts the mustard now. Everything about it is pitch perfect (indeed the sequels are a good example of how easily it could have slid into pure dreck) and is 90 minutes of pure 80's entertainment.- Was this review helpful to you?

Hit and miss
By Smellylittletoe (9 reviews) , 01 Feb 2013Enjoyable enough but over rated, much of the films humour seems to be a result of Dan O'bannons uneven Direction. It's never really scary or as thrilling as the great Zombie movies it's compared to.- Was this review helpful to you?

So dark and yet so funny
By TheWatchman (487 reviews) from Suburbia , 31 Jan 2013Return of the Living Dead is considered, by some, to be the unofficial sequel to George A Romeros classic zombie shocker Night of the Living Dead. It isnt, but the writer owned the rights to the living dead part of the title (hence the reason all Georges later offerings were simply of the Dead). But, studio politics aside, RotLD takes the modern zombie genre that George is often credited for creating and refreshes it. In fact, it refreshes it so much that, to this day, it still hasnt been beaten. Its about a group of punks who go partying in a graveyard one night, right next to a warehouse where a chemical leak resurrects the graveyards sleeping occupants. Theres nothing too original in the plot in fact, its pretty cheesy. However, its the way the whole film is executed which sets it apart. Theres so much right with it that what little bits that dont work are easily overlooked. The characters are believable and, almost all the time, do logical, sensible things. Also, its the oldies who steal the show. In a world where teenagers are normally the stars of horror films, its the older, wiser characters that both get the better lines and come through as the heroes. It has some pretty interesting situations, where the zombies are explained, plus theyre well and truly pumped up compared to George A Romeros shufflers. These guys dont die from a head shot and some of them can even solve puzzles. Not only is the film littered with pokes at Night of the Living Dead, plus generally horror films, but there are also some genuinely humorous moments on their own. Not that this is just a strict comedy. The tone is overall very dark and depressing. The sheer strength and invulnerability of the zombies compared to the humans makes it an almost lost cause for our heroes to fight against. There are so many zombie movies flooding the DVD racks these days, you may be forgiven for thinking that an obscure one from the mid eighties with no stars in it has much place in the horror genre. I think youll find youre wrong. If half the modern zombie offerings had even a fraction of the class and originality of RotLD, theyd actually get out of the Bargain Basement bins in DVD stores.- Was this review helpful to you?

BBBRRRAAAIIINNNSSS BBBRRRAAAIIINNNSSS
By PeterGriffin (35 reviews) from Southampton , 16 Feb 201280's horror at its best.
A classic mix of laughs, chills and some boobs thrown in as well!
Had me hooked as a ten year old and after almost 30 years hasn't lost any of its charm.
Still one of the best of the zombie genre if you like them a bit tongue in cheek.- Was this review helpful to you?

Best horror-comedy ever!
By PJMaybe (4 reviews) from Beverley Uk , 09 Oct 2011No horror film has made me laugh so much. For those that aren't sure - this is intended to be a comedy but if zombies keep you awake at night then you should find it a decent horror too. Apart from the spoofing of the traditional zombie films that had become quite prevalent at that time, there are also some great lines and a few good visual gags that had me chuckling away in this. Well worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?
