Most helpful review
Hilarious satire mixed with dramatic tension, excellent
By McClennan (424 reviews) from St Helens , 07 Aug 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Biopic on the space race. Some great moments of tension and excitement as we watch pilot after pilot try to break air speed and space records. Fairly standard Oscar stuff, except what were treated to in the first half of the film is some outrageous comedy that is so obviously taking the mickey that youre not sure whether its meant to be or not. Mixing political satire and parody the film lampoons elements of the whole story without losing respect for the men that were made of it.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Vince_M (47 reviews) from Darlington , 14 Dec 2011Really, really interesting chronicle of the birth of the space race. Not a short film but well worth settling down and getting lost in it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent Epic Movie
By GaryI (785 reviews) from March, Cambs , 16 Nov 2009A brilliant movie. The story of the challenge of space race, starting with breaking the sound barrier.
A rivetting movie, with great cast. American movie making at its near best. If you haven't seen this the do so, its a must.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tedious
By Kirsty1 (86 reviews) from Worcester , 26 May 2009Rather than watch this film I endured it waiting for it to improve, it did not, the only positive was the footage from the launches but this did not make up for the 3 hours I invested in this film. Pretty dreadful. Has not aged well especially the music score.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great Stuff
By a customer from Dunfermline , 20 Oct 2008From the novel by Tom Wolfe about the first American astronauts and the race to put a man in space. It depicts the process for finding the men with the 'right stuff' to put their lives on the line and make those first journeys into space. Oscar winning; it borrows many references from director John Ford's westerns. Full of satire, great aerial sequences and some very romantic moments. I liked it very much indeed.- Was this review helpful to you?
