Covering some 15 years, The Right Stuff recounts the formation of America's space program, concentrating on the original Mercury astronauts. Scott Glenn plays Alan Shepard, the first American in space; Fred Ward is Gus Grissom, the benighted astronaut for whom nothing works out as planned; and Ed Harris is John Glenn, the straight-arrow boy scout of the bunch who was the first American to orbit the earth. The remaining four Mercury boys are Deke Slayton (Scott Paulin), Scott Carpenter (Charles Frank), Wally Schirra (Lance Henriksen) and Gordon Cooper (Dennis Quaid). Wolfe's original book related in straightforward fashion the dangers and frustrations facing the astronauts (including Glenn's oft-repeated complaint that it's hard to be confident when you know that the missile you're sitting on has been built by the lowest bidder), the various personal crises involving their families (Glenn's wife Annie, a stutterer, dreads being interviewed on television, while Grissom's wife Betty, angered that her husband is not regarded as a hero because his mission was a failure, bitterly declares I want my parade!), and the schism between the squeaky-clean public image of the Mercury pilots and their sometimes raunchy earthbound shenanigans.~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Hilarious satire mixed with dramatic tension, excellent

Biopic on the space race. Some great moments of tension and excitement as we watch pilot after pilot try to break air speed and space records. Fairly standard Oscar stuff, except what we’re treated to in the first half of the film is some outrageous comedy that is so obviously taking the mickey that you’re not sure whether it’s meant to be or not. Mixing political satire and parody the film lampoons elements of the whole story without losing respect for the men that were made of it.

Deffo The Right Stuff

Really, really interesting chronicle of the birth of the space race. Not a short film but well worth settling down and getting lost in it.

Excellent Epic Movie

A brilliant movie. The story of the challenge of space race, starting with breaking the sound barrier.

A rivetting movie, with great cast. American movie making at its near best. If you haven't seen this the do so, its a must.

Tedious

Rather than watch this film I endured it waiting for it to improve, it did not, the only positive was the footage from the launches but this did not make up for the 3 hours I invested in this film. Pretty dreadful. Has not aged well especially the music score.

For fans of the early days of space flight this is worth watching as it gives an insight into those first Americans who travelled into space.

Great Stuff

From the novel by Tom Wolfe about the first American astronauts and the race to put a man in space. It depicts the process for finding the men with the 'right stuff' to put their lives on the line and make those first journeys into space. Oscar winning; it borrows many references from director John Ford's westerns. Full of satire, great aerial sequences and some very romantic moments. I liked it very much indeed.
