Anthony Hopkins battle with the devil is mainly held up by his wily acting, and an iPhone gag...

Went to the cinema last night to see this and it's ok but the sort of film i would prefer to watch on dvd. Hopkins is the best thing about it. The support acts are poor in my opinion and slightly irritating alot of the time with the usual cliched dialogue you get in films about religion. The story is simple and not all that interesting.
The cinematography is very good with some nice locations and the filming style and atmosphere is good. There are a few dodgy cgi moments though where good old fashioned make up would have been far more realistic. There are a few good frights along the way but as i said it's not one you really need to see in the cinema.- Was this review helpful to you?

(194)Not too shabby
By a customer , 25 Mar 2013Just because this didnt have a huge budget, it doesn't mean that Anthony Hopkins is not as good as he always is. He's at that age now where he can really pull off a scary role, just like the Hannibal Lector days. Its a good film, good story line too. The supporting actors were great. The film was very creepy but in a believable way, without giving away the plot of course. Worth a watch.- Was this review helpful to you?

By IronMan503 (3 reviews) , 11 Dec 2012I think the other reviews are way harsh. Really enjoyed this, Hopkins was awesome as always. Give it a go, it's worth it- Was this review helpful to you?

Nothing new here----seen one exorcism , you've seen em all :)
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 14 Oct 2012I've just written a review of 'The Last Templar', an Indiana Jones-type romp about good versus evil.
'The Rite' is good v evil in the same vein as 'The Exorcist' :
in fact it is a film about exorcism and demons, an old priest who is an expert in exorcism ( just the right role for a Hannibal Lector performance from Anthony Hopkins) , a young (reluctant) 'would-be' exorcist priest, and a high-ranking priest who teaches apprentice exorcists:)))
We have the possessed, we have the priests, we have the demons, we have the voices and thrashings around, we have everything that has been done before.
And that's what makes this film no more than average ( at best)----it's all been done before. If it were not for Hopkins' presence, it might even warrant a 2. 5 star rating.
There's nothing new here, no original twists, no new insights for those who like the serious and dramatic and frightening genre which has clung on in cinema ever since 'The Exorcism' was such a big hit back in the 1970s.
You won't be wasting your time if you watch this, especially if you like the genre, and if you prefer a bit of subtlety instead of the teenage gore genre. But don't expect anything original.- Was this review helpful to you?

Actually being possessed would have been more enjoyable
By Tonythetiger (1 review) , 12 Oct 2012Actually being possessed would have been more enjoyable than watching this film! Long, dull & not even slightly scary. Avoid- Was this review helpful to you?
