    [Highly rated reviewer]

I would freely admit that this film does not feature the most original plot - police investigate dead body found in the river of a small town - but the decidedly non-Hollywood resolution of the mystery goes some way to making up for this. The cast are all quite excellent, going some way to cover over the cracks (e.g. a rather hastily conceived and pursued romance, a not so surprising 'secret' from the protagonist's childhood) in the adaptation from novel length material. Furthermore, the film is generally well shot, with a soundtrack that is cleverly sparse and quite effective - all of which contributes up to a competent piece with a leisurely pace, which overall, is to be recommended.

    surprisingly good.

a brooding slowburn thriller/drama with excellent cinematography.

    fine natural performances.

the atmospheric nature shots ( the woods, the river) are really beautiful and add to a well made film.

At the end of this film I was left wondering 'what was all that about?'

Having said that, it's not a bad movie, but neither is it a great movie.

The premise is a kid from a posh local school is found dead in a frozen river. The cops seem uninterested, convinced he committed suicide, except for one, who is keen to pursue the case despite the apathy or his partner and superiors.

'Was it murder or suicide', 'Did he jump or was he pushed', 'Is there a supernatural element or isn't there?', 'Did the cops supress evidence or not?', 'Was he influenced by his brother's death or not?'

All these questions are unanswered. So in some ways it is unsatisfactory.

However, the acting is solid and as a whole and the movie entertains for it's duration.

If you can put up with the rest and a plot has lots of holes, give it a go.

It's not too bad and you might find what I missed!

    Hi

This film started out well, leading you to believe it was either a ghost or murder film. However as it progressed and, through flashbacks, showed you events leading to the death of the boy, it became more and more tame, with a really weak ending.

If you are bored stiff one evening, it's worth watching, but then that funky white paint that goes on pink and changes as it dries would be equally thrilling.........
