    [Highly rated reviewer]

A wonderfully acted and evocative film, based on a Tennessee Williams book, set in Rome about an ageing American actress(Helen Mirren) who has just lost her husband during a joint trip to Europe. She stays on in Rome and is introduced to a series of gigolos by the Contessa (beautifully played by Anne Bancroft).

Finally she falls for Paulo (Olivier Martinez) and they have a passionate relationship that she knows ultimately is based on falseness and her own wish to fill the void in her life, whilst facing the realities of the march of time. Enjoy !!

A smart remake of the 1961 Vivien Leigh movie is given its major lustre by a typically excellent performance by Mirren as the aging Broadway star in Italy who kids herself that the gigolo she’s taken up with actually loves her. Mirren brings some great shadings to the character – as well as a refreshing amount of nudity – to create an empathetic if flawed heroine. Bancroft is equally good in her final role as the pimp.

You quote two critics' reviews of the earlier version of this movie starring Vivien Leigh, but offer for rental only the Helen MIrren version. Why ? (I asked this question a week ago and have received no answer).

Helen Mirren seldom makes a mistake in choosing her films, but she may well have regretted this one.

The opening is promising, and Mirren herself is as usual charismatic as the ageing Broadway actress, who retires to live in Rome after being suddenly widowed. There she is taken up by an impoverished Italian Contessa (Anne Bancroft) who makes a living by introducing handsome young men to wealthy foreign women - mostly American.

After fending off a couple of these, Mirren's character falls under the sexual spell of another dubious member of the Italian aristocracy, played convincingly by Olivier Martinez. This is the cue for several torrid sexual scenes, but also for much emotional vacillating, which seems to take an age to come to a head.

I had the feeling that Mirren became unsure of what motivated the actress, whose behaviour indeed seemed out of character for such a decisive person, and the ending of the film left me utterly confused.

The only enjoyable memory for me was Anne Bancroft's portrayal of the bitter, greedy and devious Contessa, eaten away with hatred for the part that America played in World War II.

This sounded a treat of a film but I have to say I found it depressing.
