After a three year delay we can all breathe a sigh of relief, as The Rum Diary is certainly worth the wait.

The hum-drum diary!
By Stocks (13 reviews) from Eastleigh , 23 May 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
There were some quite funny moments, but unfortunately they didn't really link together in any sort of coherant way.
I usually like Johnny Depp films but this one was just odd. Most of the film is just him wandering around. I couldn't really make out any sort of storyline.
If you are drunk yourself and feel like killing a couple of hours then go for it!- Was this review helpful to you?

(179)Self-discovery, corruption, and rage aplenty!
By NedMerrill (7 reviews) from Scotland , 12 May 2013The point to this inspirational film, as some reviews point out as being pointless, is to show the brutality and the greed of America and their exploitation, control and disregard of foreign relations, as European colonialism did before the the U. S. The main protagonist Paul Kemp (Hunter S. Thompson) progressively discovers these horrors and concludes with his idealism 'of ink and rage' that propelled his fame. Other reviewers, making claims that there was no point to the literary adaption of one of Hunter's first novels unpublished at the time. Seem to lack integrity and understanding, most likely due to their spoon fed tastes and brainwashed lack of critical analysis. Perhaps they should stick to watching mind numbing banal cinema or television like channel 5, ITV2 or E4 rather than, seeking out to attempt a negative review of a film they can't grasp. Most probably Johnny Depp, who plays Thompson yet again with respect and savoir-faire, dragged them to watch it, these people have sent me to to write with 'rage' as too most likely Thompson would have done too, or at least threw them a barrage of insults. Oh the irony, wake up, it's not that complex to grasp. This is a film of self-discovery, the imagery and symbolism throughout lets us feel and follow Kemp's growing distrust of abusive authority and the way racism and the media's manufacture of what's 'news'. Fighting of male chickens [apparently the usage of 'c*ck-fighting according to this site is rude] and swastikas, for example aid the themes of political exploitation and mistreatment of race and culture. Perhaps 'The American Dream' isn't quite what most of us are led to believe. Not recommended for 'swine' without the ability to think, get back to your Daily Mail and watch movies that perhaps star Adam Sandler and prompt no use of thinking at all. 'Bah-Rumbug', 'Humdrum Diaries' sound like puns from a red top. As the film explicitly points out all humans have capacity to think for themselves, why not try then.- Was this review helpful to you?

Humdrum diaries
By Muppett (13 reviews) , 28 Feb 2013This is a strange film, which never really gets going..we were expecting more, having read previous reviews but found it tedious and, at times, quite boring. As others have commented there is no real plot or ending..the film just plods along and then stops! Shame.....- Was this review helpful to you?
