I had never heard of The Runaways until I saw this film. I had no idea who they were or what they sounded like. And, in many ways, it doesn’t matter. This film’s synopsis calls the story a ‘coming of age’ tale. It is, but not really of the characters. It struck me that Dakota Fanning wanted to do something totally different to the little kiddie we have grown used to seeing. And, if that WAS her intention, it worked.

No disrespect to Kristen Stewart, but she drew the shorter straw character-wise. Stewart grunts and scowls while Fanning gets all the good bits.

If you like seventies music (and, by that, I mean music from the seventies that DOESN’T involve Abba) it’s a bonus – Bowie, Iggy and the Sex Pistols feature heavily on the film’s soundtrack.

I don’t know how true to life this film is, but it works. It’s probably nothing new, but it’s an enjoyable romp about girls trying to make a name for themselves in the very male-dominated world of rock/rock music.

I love rock ‘n roll!

About the reviewer: TheWatchman

34 year old suburbanite and part-time zombie. Shuffles the daylight hours between slowly destroying the few brain cells I have left by sitting at an office desk 9-5, and existing in a parallel universe where I control the world and all the little otters in the pond. By night I'm normally asleep and miles away from my rapidly decaying body. I dream a lot too. I'm not quite sure whether I dream more during the day or the night, all I know is that people keep accusing me of talking to myself. That probably means I'm either reliving a past event (and changing it to how I wanted it to work out) or preparing some future conversation (and trying to work it to my advantage).
