Funny, warm ,delightful...such a pleasure to watch!
By a customer from North London , 19 Feb 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
If you want to watch a movie that's a bit different from what's available out there, then watch this movie. Gael and Charlotte are equally brilliant in this touching movie! I've always thought that Gael is one of the most brilliant actors around as he has proven his roles. But this is a beautiful love story that is all about human connection. It allows the viewer into Stephane's(Gael) mind and his anguish over his father's death and how he deals with his loss. When he meets his new neighbour, Stephanie (Charlotte) he is initially not attracted to her (he fancies her friend, Zoe)but realises that they effortlessly share the same inner world. He realises, as he says in the end, that he loves her because she is the only person he knows that's not boring. To top it off something aboout her reminds him of his father. But of course it's not a straight forward love story. (are love stories evers straight forward, I wonder?!!) It's such a beautiful film, so fantastically presented to the audience, that this just becomes a delightful treat to watch. If you're feeling a bit low, go and see this movie for a picker upper!- Was this review helpful to you?

(219)fantastic fantasties
By awakeasleep (27 reviews) from York , 05 Nov 2012A humerous, enjoyable story of a young man looking for love that is juxtaposed with weird and wonderful animations during his daydreams and dreams. Not sure who said this is similiar to eternal sunshine but it is nothing like it so you will be disappointed if that is what you are looking for. Though this film deserves credit in its own right.- Was this review helpful to you?

Odd but I liked it
By erp (67 reviews) from Manchester , 17 Jun 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
This film definitely goes in the weird box. Not everyone will find it to their taste but I enjoyed its cleverness and wit, its often brilliant visual inventiveness and the flair of the acting. Bernal was particularly good, and his wild emotionalism was deftly counterpointed by the genial cynicism of Alain Chabat. I was entertained by these qualities and by a general sense of humanity and warmth rather than rather than finding this a profoundly moving work, but I suspect that it may be one of those films that gains in depth the more you see it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Weird...
By a customer from OXON , 02 May 2012Your typical 'out there' European film. Good acting but plenty of nudity and random madness. Actually it's not too bad but you need to know what you're getting to avoid disappointment.- Was this review helpful to you?

One for the Gondry fans.
By Clowns (5 reviews) from London , 10 Apr 2012Ok, this is not an easy one to watch, but if you can enjoy something that challenges you, you can do this.
Michel Gondry's main claim to fame is music videos to the likes of Bjork, Beck, Radiohead etc, all of which are a little left of centre, but fits the bill perfectly to the artists needs. As of this movie, the direction is perfect.
The plot lies tangled up between a sweet love story, an entirely strange work environment, and a man trying to express himself, and of course exploration of the subconscious. There is really not much more I can say except, yes, I had to watch it twice, but I'm glad I did because it made me really appreciate the fantastic animation that was very textured and organic (great bit in the extras that you can see how it was done that was very interesting).
Gael Garcia Bernal and Charlotte Gainsbourg and lovely together in this, and keep this flowing. Recommended for Gondry fans for his creative vision.- Was this review helpful to you?
