An adult animated version of the Grimm tale that you won't be taking the kids to. Into a surreal landscape of mutants and insects is born poor Tom. His parents fail to protect him from kidnappers' who conduct a series of bizarre medical experiments on our hero. Escaping, Tom befriends a Giant who inadvertently kills him, releasing him into an afterlife that is not harps, clouds and angels. Director Dave Borthwick must have been delighted when the BBC extended this from a ten minute short to a full length feature but not everyone will enjoy being exposed to his nightmarish vision.
A squalid, predatory and unlovely universe is brilliantly created using a mix of live action, pixilation and stop-motion animation. The images are of decay and dissolution and disturbing in their detail (a laboratory technician's rubber gloves covered in
Tom Thumb, what a chap. When asked to explain this film to a friend, i was unable to due to the incredible weirdness and mind bending qualities of the picture.
Very surreally but effectively filmed, just think morph living in the real world.
However i do advise not to watch this film under the influence!
