this story is wonderful. My daughter Bethany loved it, and has since read the secret garden book by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
The story centres around Mary Lennox, recently orphaned, sent to live with her uncle at an old manor, surrounded by a gloomy and foggy moor.
At first, Mary does not seem to enjoy life at the Manor, because she is lonely and longs for someone to play with.
At the manor, she must live with the mean Mrs. Medlock, whom she dislikes.
However, Mary soon makes friends with Martha, her younger brother Dickon, and a young sickly boy called Colin, who is Mary's cousin.
Mary discovers many secrets, as to why Colin is always kept in a lonely bed, and why her uncle is so down and depressed.
But the biggest secret she finds, is the entrance to an old garden, which she and her new friend Dickon help bring back to life.
This movie is beautifully filmed, with lots of picturesque landscapes and settings within Yorkshire.
This film also has the most breathtaking melodies, especially the closing song called 'Winter Light.'

(39)Lovely family film.
By a customer , 08 Dec 2011Great one for all of the family to watch. Reminded me of when I used to watch the series on TV as a child. My daughter kept still all the way through so cant be bad.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent, give it a try
By a customer , 26 Jul 2011My two children aged 6 and 9 (who love films like Shrek and the Incredibles) voted this the best film they'd ever seen. They still talk about it months later. Its very Jane Austin in feel, no special effects or monsters!.- Was this review helpful to you?

old style fantasy magic
By vonbon from scotland , 30 Jul 2010My 10 year old daughter loved this movie despite my reservations. In these days of special effects, this movie proves that kids will just as much love a good old fashioned story, simplistically presented.- Was this review helpful to you?

A real uplift!
By Antiquary (52 reviews) from Aberdeen , 22 Mar 2010I thoroughly enjoyed this one - so, surely, will everybody. The settings are beautiful, the story is not only life-affirming but credibly so, and the performances by the two child actors are impeccable - of a far higher standard than we often see from juvenile leads. Maggie Smith is flawless as always as the well-intentioned but disastrously misguided housekeeper. What prevented me from giving the film five stars - just four-and-a-half - is the shadowy figure of the master of the house: this character could have been presented in much greater depth; but his was the only performance that gave me any disappointment. Strongly recommended!- Was this review helpful to you?
