Sherlock Holmes (Nicol Williamson) becomes a patient of Sigmund Freud (Alan Arkin) in this stylish interpretation of the great sleuth by director Herbert Ross. Worried that his great friend's cocaine addiction is deepening, Dr Watson (Robert Duvall) dupes Holmes into travelling to Vienna to receive treatment at the hands of the great Austrian psychoanalyst. While Freud tries to find a way into Holmes' subconscious, the great detective busies himself by taking on a case involving the disappearance, and possible kidnapping, of ex-addict actress Lola Devereaux (Vanessa Redgrave).

Good fun and quite disturbing at times. Robert Duval English accent leaves a lot to be desired but apart form this it was very good. Nicol Williamson is fantastic as usual!

Worth a look

The Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movie owes a debt to this, as it dwells on Holmes' drug addiction at some length. Nicol Williamson rather resembles Adrian Edmondson, Robert Duvall mangles the English accent and Alan Arkin seems to be trying to be Robert DeNiro as much as Freud. Still, it's got a couple of great sets by Bond set designer Ken Adam and it's a neat reinterpretation of the legend.
