Strong comedy great
By D Wiggins from Stafford , 09 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
The draw of this film to first-time viewers, other than the ever-gorgeous Marilyn Monroe (obviously), should be the still-funny and often very dry humour.
Tom Ewell proves to be a smart casting move as the alone-for-the-summer husband looking for a bit of a tumble with the girl upstairs (Monroe). His attempts at seduction are laughable with the 'suave' act failing wonderfully - see the piano scene and cringe at the wannabe-sophisticated voice.
Marilyn's knack for comedy is often overlooked but is in strong evidence here, her TV-spot confession being a fine example.
Although The Seven Year Itch is not as laugh-out-loud funny as I had expected, it remains a solid classic, far better than most modern well-written comedies.- Was this review helpful to you?

(22)Classic that hasn't aged well
By Ferry41 (228 reviews) from Oxford , 04 Jun 2013Watching these types of movies makes you realise how far women have come. This has all the sexist cliches about dumb blondes etc and sex crazed married men. Might have been funny originally, but now feels a bit painful. Worth seeing to see Marilyn Monroe in action, but she's been in better films.- Was this review helpful to you?

Once this would have been funny
By a customer , 16 Mar 2013but not now. There isn't a funny line in the film and the pace is agonisingly laboured. Despite being directed by Billy Wilder, avoid.- Was this review helpful to you?

Old Time Sex Comedy
By Cato (715 reviews) from Lydbury North , 08 Oct 2012Obviously a vehicle for Monroe, this was so obviously the screen version of a play, and probably worked better on the stage, especially as the film was subject to strict censoring at the time . Mind you, I bet it went down very well at the time, and Marilyn lightened up everything she did.- Was this review helpful to you?

Marilyn is the famous dress scene
By accurist01 (39 reviews) from High Wycombe , 04 Dec 2011We will all know this film for the famous scene of Marilyn Monroe in that white dress that blew up as the subway train goes past. Yes . It is an iconic moment in movie magic, but unfortunately the rest of the film is a bit flat especially when you compare it to her better film Some like it Hot. Yes Marilyn looks as beautiful as ever and plays her part well, but as comedies go, for me it just fell a bit short of the mark. It doesnt mean this is not worth seeing, not at all. I just would say Ive seen better, and apart from Marilyn this film would not be one of those classics.- Was this review helpful to you?

Comedy that dearly misses the mark!
By a customer , 02 Dec 2011As this was 'the movie' which shot Monroe to stardom with her white dress blowing up from an air vent, I couldn't help but expect something spectacular. Also most of the reviews indicated that this would be funny.
It wasn't.
The movie starts with the lead male character talking to himself out loud A LOT, daydreaming and using the daydreams as a justification for then going to do something stupid and profoundly un-comedic.
Beyond saying 'Hey Marilyn Monroe is hot isn't she?', I really don't know what kind of story this movie was trying to tell.
That is why I didn't finish it and encourage others not to rent it.- Was this review helpful to you?
