Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?. Alec Baldwin does, here playing both wealthy socialite Lamont Cranston and his mysterious alter ego, the Shadow, who uses psychic powers to render himself invisible at will. The famous 1930s pulp-fiction crime-fighter takes on a descendant of Genghis Khan who's out to conquer the world with a pre-Second World War nuclear device in Highlander director Russell Mulcahy's flight of comic-strip fantasy. It's stuffed with fun clichés of the genre, and the spectacle of the exquisite design easily matches the visual punch of the special effects. Unfortunately, the flashy production values rather overshadow the performances of Baldwin and the star-studded supporting cast, while the plot rarely grips.
A dim attempt to revive a forgotten hero of pulp fiction, radio and a little-regarded cinema serial of the 40s; the period setting looks good but the story is thin and the result forgettable.
Alec Baldwin makes a brilliant Shadow, redeaming himself after his wrong-doing as an alter-ego. The whole secret society thing is well done too.
The 1930s settings allows this to be somewhat tongue in cheek although I think this was overdone in a couple of places.
Like most movies of this specific genre, stick it down as a 'beer and pizza' night in with friends and enjoy!
This is ' The Shadow' sure it had
the potential to be darker and have a much better storyline but the good part of this movie is that it dosen't take itself too seriously { with the scenarios in the movie how could you?} basically The Shadow was once this ancient criminal who is captured by young man{Alec Baldwin} who puts it on and becomes ' The Shadow' the Shadow is the new crime fighting vigilante in 1930's New York City. The Shadow comic book in which this is based were very successful and were also on the radio. The Shadow actually inspired Bob Kane to create 'Batman' so the legacy means something. this is such an influencial saga but since the success of the bat films this film looks like it's trying to cash in. Penelope Anne Miller plays the main love interest { who is a lot like Nicole Kidman's Doctor Chase Merridian in her performance.} her father{ played by Ian McKellen} is possessed by the surviving descendant of Gengus Kahn who has been reborn from an ancient tomb inside the local museum accidentally. all in all this movie isn't wonderful but fun. Tim Curry's sniveling advisor was brilliant though. i just hope that they do something a bit different if they ever make ' The Shadow II' ***
