Angus (Rufus Sewell) and Lillie (Carla Gugino) run a travelling carnival. While travelling the Irish countryside, they give a ride to an old sailor who in turn invites them into his castle to see his most prized possession--a live mermaid kept in a tank (Rya Kihlstadt). Knowing they can make a fortune off of the fabled half-fish, half-woman creature, Angus steals her for his show and loads her on a boat to sail to America. Little does he know, the mermaid masks a horror that will not show its face until he and his crew are far from shore. SHE CREATURE first appeared on Cinemax as part of the CREATURE FEATURES series, which remakes several 1950s monster films from Samuel L. Arkoff's American International Pictures.

Not many horror movies feature mermaids as opposed to vampires or werewolves so this caught my attention. It's safe to say that plot logic and a credible script are not the film's strong points, but these are offset by an atmospheric setting at sea, Carla Gugino being very good as the circus-owner's wife with secrets of her own, and the seductive, creepy presence of the mermaid, who never speaks but always dominates her every scene.
The film does lose focus towards the end when the special effects come out to play and we run into 'Aliens' territory, but it's certainly worth a look.
This is not your average slash and spurt horror. Instead it's a cosy but unsettling story with a real period feel. The creaking timbers and the sounds of the ocean suggest that you have strayed into her environment, a place where you no longer feel safe.
More drama than horror, it's still probably best not to watch it on a boat..........Trust me.
