All performances by the actors were fantatic, great film!By Sparkie from BRISTOL, UK , 06 Jul 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]It is a quietly moving story of a damaged soul, beaten down emotionally, decent, shy man, going thro life in a dream.
Kevin Spacey plays the main charater, Quoyle, whose only experience of love,
is a heart-breakingly one-sided marriage to Petal (Cate Blanchett).
Traumatised by her death he is left with their daughter Bunny, (Gainer triplets). Aunt Agnis (Judi Dench) takes them to Newfoundland to their ancestral home to discover his roots.
There is something magical about this film. When they get to Newfoundland there are colourful characters & mysteries that unfold.
Quoyle must discover if he can love & be loved in return without pain.
Now he starts to learn about himself, his family & his capabilities.
This is a slowly unfolding & richly rewarding film that will stay with you for a long time.

Sunday afternoon viewing.By MzBizkitz (67 reviews) , 13 Oct 2012I really liked this but I'm biased because I really liked the book. It is a slow film and it probably isn't for everyone but it does follow the book well and it's a good Sunday afternoon watch.
Weird filmBy St4nerz (1 review) , 18 Sep 2012I'm usually a huge Kevin spacey fan, and everything he's in is brilliant, however this was one of the strangest films I've ever watched! I ejected it about an hour in and sent it back. Maybe that was a mistake but I just couldn't see where it was going.
The Shipping NewsBy a customer , 03 Aug 2012Well acted family drama. A bit slow but possibly this added to the atmosphere of the film setting and story.
Disappointing portrayalBy a customer , 03 Aug 2012I had been looking forward to viewing this film but was very disappointed. Something in Quoyle's character and the way it was portrayed didn't add up. It had the germ of what could have been a good story but I felt it failed to live up to that opportunity.
If you like this film - then READ THE BOOK!!!By cataloggy (12 reviews) , 14 Jun 2012The Shipping News by Annie Proulx is my Favourite Book. The language and Newfoundland landscape are beautifully woven into a tale of how a broken man finds an unexpected new life for himself and his family.
The film is an acceptible echo of the book; it approximates the original story. The enjoyable performances of Kevin Spacey, Judi Dench, Julianne Moore & Rys Ifans evoke Annie Proulx's characters enough for me to give the 3 *** rating. If you like this film - then READ THE BOOK! If you can read at all - READ THE BOOK!
