Shirley Temple finds work for her architect father after befriending an eccentric old millionaire in this Depression-era fable directed by Irving Cummings. The little trouper was growing up and being given excessively mature dialogue, losing much of her bubbly charm. But she sings and dances with Bill Robinson for the fourth and last time, and that's pure magic. Joan Davis and Bert Lahr lend strong support, along with Claude Gilllingwater Sr as the wealthy old codger and Charles Farrell as the father.

    Pure magic

Forget the poor remake of this classic film - 'You've got mail', this is the original and best. Set in Matuschek's (the shop of the title) with Mr Matuschek played by the wonderful Frank Morgan. You may know him better as The Wizard of Oz!

James Stewart is the hero of the tale, who falls in love with his penpal, who turns out to be his fellow shop assistant - and they don't get on at all! Will she still hate him when she finds out that he is her penpal?

This is one of my all time favourite films, if you loved It's a Wonderful Life, you'll love this film.
