The Loud Silence
By johnnyL from County Antrim , 14 May 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I rented this film because I could not remember the story and could recall that I had been deeply affected by it when I last saw it 35 years ago. As I watched it, I not only knew each scene but also found each object in each scene to be as familiar as things I had lived with years ago.
The story could be summed up in a couple of dozen words, although the depth of feelings could never be plumbed: Such is the talent of the actors in this film and of Bergmans direction.
Bergman and his cameraman Sven Nykvist also made a film of beautiful power. Monochrome can be painted with light more effectively and subtly than can garish colour.
But, the one scene I had not forgotten and still shocks me was what the little boy did with the photos.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good but not IB's best
By Kulturmonster (59 reviews) from Ipswich , 12 Nov 2011This film has much that is good about it, and if it was Bergman's only film it might be hailed as a masterpiece, but if you read the extract's from Bergman's notes in the bonus feature, he virtually admits that the film has flaws.
The photography is stark high contrast black and white and more expressionist than most of Bergman's films. The little boy and the group of players are portrayed very well but somehow the central relationship of the two sisters is not as gripping as you would hope.- Was this review helpful to you?

You can watch Bergman without being 'in the know'
By Great Expectations from Leeds, West Yorkshire , 11 May 2007His films always create controversial responses and that's the realm where they lie and should be appreciated in my view. What is this film about? Where do you want me to start? Why should someone else tell you? Try it and see. It is a contradiction of rawness and sophistication, humanity and horror, innocence and troubled souls. It is suffocating and you almost feel the illness of the bed-ridden sister. The child seems to be walking amongst all of this and the impact it could have on his innocence is palpable. This is a film that attacks the senses and once seen, will not be forgotten. Moreover, I think the magic of Bergman is that he releases primordial symbols and forces us to face the fear of them or intellectually deal with them.- Was this review helpful to you?
