The undead have it all their own way in this religious farrago which is not so wild nor so profound as it thinks it is: it suffers, sadly, from a terminal case of farcical script. Working with the romantic leads from his medieval fantasy, A Knight's Tale, writer/director Brian Helgeland has constructed what might be called a roman policier about young priest Alex Bernier (Heath Ledger) who's sent to Rome with whimsical love interest Mara (Shannyn Sossamon) to investigate the suspicious death of his mentor, Father Dominic (Francesco Carnelutti). Dominic was involved in the dreaded practice of the sin eater who literally absolves people by consuming their moral offences. But the film's candle-lit goings on, familiar religious trappings and diabolical dialogue really diminish the occasional moments of ecclesiastical high thinking: originally called The Order, its new title sums up its freak-show concept.
After bombing in the US, the film makers must have thought long and hard about what to do to make this film seem more interesting to British audiences. So they renamed it from The Order to The Sin Eater. It doesn't matter what the film is called however, either way it still ends up being one of the most painful to watch films I have ever seen.
The plot is not only silly and slow, but there is simply nothing interesting about it. You never get to engage with any of the characters as you never really want to care for them and the humour they tried to inject into certain scenes of the film was misplaced and simply lame.
Whoever came up with the bright idea of reuniting half the cast of A Knight's Tale for this film (hey if it rocked, hy shouldn't this?' will be regretting it now.
This film is not interesting.
This film has a boring, nonsensical plot.
This film is in NO WAY scary.
This film rivals Gigli for worst of 2003
This film is THAT bad.
Have you ever rented a movie and thought 'since i'v paid for it, i may as well watch it because it's costing me every month?' Well this is one of those movies. There wasn't anything in the film that really gripped me like a thriller should. It was quite slow, predictable and not what i expected, which is a shame because the idea behind it was good. However, this is my opinion dont let it stop YOU from being disappointed too.
