Dont' bother with disc 3. It's just an unimaginative selection of archive material wheeled out under the guise of 'value-added content'. Nice one, BBC Worldwide (the sales company appointed by the BBC).- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer from Coulsdon , 21 Sep 2009Watched this again, having sat through most of it as a teenager. Really appreciated the writing this time. I wonder if it would get commissioned these days as it is very dark and quite long. Really deals with how childhood memories haunt you into adulthood. Very eerie and punctuated with the fourties sound track, very watchable. Dennis Potter's bile is given vent through Phillip Marlow the central character. Excellent. The 3rd disc isn't worth the rental.
By Dryas (1 review) from Inverness , 03 Feb 2009The first two discs are fantastic, the six episodes of the TV series. I was surprised to receive a third disc. For me it was a waste of a rental. Exactly as a previous reviewer has described it - just bulking up the package with boring stuff to increase the price. Singing detective, in small doses please nurse
By a customer from Enfield , 25 Nov 2008This series left me in a quandry. It undoubtedly remains a masterpiece and highly entertaining. The cast excel and the writing pure genius. Dennis Potter is a unique talent and racconteur. Each scene has more than one meaning, that may or may not be explained at a later time and in a different guise. However, 6 episodes in a few days, no matter how much I enjoyed it, left me dreading the thought of another night in with the Singing Detective. The CD was left on the side, untouched, for many nights as I drummed up the enthusiasm. I can only surmise that the 'once a week viewing formula for each episode' was there for a reason and proved sufficient. You can have too much of a good thing.- Was this review helpful to you?
