    [Highly rated reviewer]

Not a patch on the tv series which just goes to show that star names doesnt equal star performances.Robert Downey isnt at all convincing in the lead role which overstretches his meagre acting talents.Where is Micheal Gambon when you need him.

I don't think this film should necessarilly be wholly judged on the TV series, which I seem to remember went on for an awfully long time, After all, Dennis Potter did in fact write the screenplay for the film, which surely must give it some sense of integrity in that it was a bona fide condensed cinema version of his TV play. In fact I thought the film wasn't that bad, and Robert Downet Jr gave a very good performance as the poor psoriasis affected writer. If I had to complain about something, it was maybe the whole depressingly misogynistic tone of the story, which was somewhat saved by some of the glorious songs of my youth.

If you want a film you can enjoy with the other half then this is not for you.

Robert Downey Jnr plays Dan Dark, an author languishing in a hospital bed with disfiguring and agonizing skin condition that covers his whole body. To free him self from the physical and mental pain (and his troubled past) he escapes into a fantasy world where he is a 50’s detective.Trouble starts when the lines between fantasy and reality become blurred. He attempts to find a handle on reality with the help of a psychiatrist, Dr Gibbon, (unrecognisable) played by Mel Gibson.

This a good film in its own right with an outstanding sound track, But the original TV series better.

I really wanted to like this film - I was expecting a lot more of the 'film noir' type detective story with a bit of a twist. What you actually get for the majority of the film is a Robert Downey Jr in a hospital bed all covered in sores, loosing his grip on reality. Quite often the film breaks into song which is really silly and makes it feel very disjointed. I guess it might appeal to some people as an 'arthouse' type film but it was a shame they didnt concentrate more on the 'Danny Dark' story which could be really captivating.

I have not seen this review but as a sufferer of psorasis and psoriatic arthritis I would just like to correct MR Sicky - psoriasis is not scabs but an inherited auto-immune disorder that manifests itself through the skin and the joints after a traumatic health event (i.e. cold/flu etc).

I find the term 'scabs' to be insulting as well as inaccurate.
