The Sixth Sense

In this chilling psychological thriller, eight-year-old Cole Sear is haunted by a dark secret: He is visited by ghosts. A helpless and reluctant channel, Cole is terrified by threatening visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. Confused by his paranormal powers, Cole is too young to understand his purpose and too terrified to tell anyone about his torment, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe. As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the ominous truth about Cole's supernatural abilities, the consequence for client and therapist is a jolt that awakens them both to something harrowing -- and unexplainable.

Writer/director M Night Shyamalan has fashioned a modern classic here, a chilly, intelligent, emotional ghost story that relies not on the obligatory gore and knifeplay for its many shocks but on glimpses of an afterlife that's anything but angels and harps. Bruce Willis plays it quiet and reflective as the child psychologist attempting to get inside the head of likeable newcomer Haley Joel Osment, who sees dead people “all the time”. Toni Collette (Muriel's Wedding) is equally convincing as the boy's troubled mum and, though the film's initial impact hinged on chatter about its knockout twist ending (the sort to have you buying another ticket), in truth it's the controlled pace of Shyamalan's direction and the simplicity of his storytelling that make it so rewatchable.

Spooky movie with a twist ending that changes the focus of what has gone before; it's both clever and disturbing, maintaining a haunting atmosphere that keeps its audience off-balance.

Bruce Willis is the famous star, but HJ Osmont is the real star - the young kid who perfectly captures the mood and leaves you with the memories

The film's about a messed up kid who thinks he's seeing ghosts, and his psychotherapist (Willis) who never quite seems to get a handle on things. The two protagonists are brilliant, supported very effectively by Toni Collett as the kid's single struggling mum.

The film's famous for its twist at the end. What it's not so famous for is the excellent DVD-only commentaries which help you understand the film and make you watch it again - when you realise that actually, despite knowing the twist, there's a lot more to enjoy.

Bruce Willis did this movie for love - and on the strength of it, did a sequel (Unbreakable - also very good, tho not as much). And he's not even the best actor. That's most of what you need to know

Moonlighting (1985-1989) In the mid 1980s Walter Willis landed a lead role on prime time television, ditched his first name and became household heartthrob Bruce Willis. The prolonged on-screen sexual tension Bruce shared with his co-star Cybill Shepherd lasted for five steamy years, much to the delight of fans everywhere. However, in 1989 the show took a nose dive after its writers succumbed to fans’ wishes and made the on-screen duo official. In the closing episode of Moonlighting,... Read more
