This edgy boffin film by Powell and Pressburger was made in 1949 with a fairly starry cast (Jack Hawkins, Cyril Cusack, Renee Asherson, etc) in support roles. The leads were the relatively unknown (now) David Farrar and Kathleen Byron, who had worked together in Black Narcissus. Although there is a very tense upper lip bomb disposal at the end, the thrust of the film is around the different agendas of politicians, business-men and soldiers. There is also considerable focus on the havoc played by long nights of work on the private lives of those involved. Well worth watching.
