Cold Case That Leaves You ColdBy Jennish (336 reviews) from Rye , 26 Apr 2012
[Highly rated reviewer]A dull and contrived morality fable about corrupt cops in New York, again. Everything about this, ahem, thriller, is wrong. It is a real struggle to make the list of failures even half way concise.
Perhaps the lack of a central performance is the best place to start. The lead actor thinks constipated staring is a way of expressing emotions, Katie Holmes screeches without provocation and the director doesn't even let Al Pacino overact with his trade mark flamboyance. Al hasn't been in a bigger dud since Revolution.
If it isn't the acting it is the script. The most annoying feature is that it is set in 2002 for no real reason and keeps jumping back to 1986 for little real reason either. The whole thing could have been handled with a simple flashforward rather than making us sweat for 10 minutes worth of flashbacks that are spread over the whole movie, long after we've guessed the content, breaking up any attempt at tension. The choice of dates seems to have been largely so that an aged Al Pacino could plausibly look like he might have been on the force in 86 and 2002 was chosen so everyone could talk about 9/11 which Americans seem not to be over yet.
The story itself has no real purpose other than some vague 'meaning of friendship/family' line and only works based on the utter stupidity of its protagonist for forgetting there were two witnesses to the murders he committed as a child. Because the audience isn't that dumb they'll be left wondering why on earth it is taking the cops so long to work it out and they'll be utterly bemused as to why Juliette Binoche's loathsome journalist needs to be murdered when all it does is make a nuisance into a crisis?
The only real saving grace for this bland cop movie is that it has a very short running time at 1h22. The director may have been inept but at least he wasn't a sadist.

Very watchable.By ricoh (142 reviews) from Calne , 19 Jan 2013There's a lot of negative reviews about this film, but i thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the pace of the film, with respect for the storyline was excellent, and the slow brooding cental character was portrayed to perfection. Nobody has mentioned the child actor who played the cop, who was excellent. I have to agree with a couple of reviewers about the dialogue, it was at times difficult to pick up, and i ended up putting the subtitles on, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment. Contrary to some comments, i thought the central character played a great part, and really caught the mood of the film. I am a pretty conservative marker, but have no hesitation in giving it 3. 5 stars, and would recommend a watch if you are prepared to be patient and not expect a shoot me up film.
