Most helpful review
One of the really good Westerns which is highly recommended.

This is one of many John Wayne Westerns that would receive a 4 star rating from me. How did he manage to make such high-quality stuff along his iconic journey through cinema history?
He couldn't act , he couldn't even walk properly LOL.....but he just had that presence of a giant man on the screen. I do not think I could give any of his post-Stagecoach westerns less than 3 stars, but so many higher-rated ones were made along the way. Amazing !
And this movie is one of the really good ones. A clever story, plenty of action and thrills, very good supporting cast including Dean Martin, a top-notch director. All the right ingredients.
But without Duke, it may have fallen along the wayside as just another Western .....it's possible. This is most definitely a JOHN WAYNE film no matter what other good points it has ( and it has many).
A 'must' for all Western fans, and indeed I do not think it would disappoint any viewer who rarely bothers with Westerns.
Highly Recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

(17)Bad Western
By a customer , 04 May 2013The film critic Dilys Powell said 'there's no such thing as a bad western'. Surely the exception that proves the rule here. Such leaden, heavy-handed directing, obvious use of music and wooden dialogue that even the Great Wayne and Deano couldn't bring it to life. Dreadful!- Was this review helpful to you?

The sons of katie Elder
By jonahc (2 reviews) from GLASGOW , 14 Oct 2009Good old fashioned cowoy film, with plenty of action and drama. John wayne plays the part of the big tough older brother, with Dean Martin playing a good supporting role.- Was this review helpful to you?
