I think this is one the great films. It hit a chord with a whole post war generation with its twin themes of the importance, even civil right, to 'home' as in belonging culturally and to the land, and to political and personal freedom. And it tells the story in a way that affirms these qualities in stark contrast to the harshly oppressive nature of the nazis.
