This brilliant sci-fi series is set in the year 2063 and centers on a squadron of first year Marine corps fighter pilots who's mission is to protect Earth from a newly discovered race of aliens out to conquer us. I remember this series showing late night on BBC 2 around 1996-7 and loved it. It's a good looking cast and the A.I mercenaries are great! Im not sure how it would compare to some of the newer shows and I wouldn't describe it as particularly original, but its good fun and worth a look.

  • The space - not aged well but entertaining

This has dated badly and I did not find it absorbing enough as I did when it was first aired. There are a good range of characters and they are acted well. If you love space stuff it maybe good for you.

  • Dated but still has it's charms

How I loved this when it was on telly. At the time it seemed really fresh and different. Although S:AAB was an inspiration for lots of modern scifi it is dated when you compare it to the best of modern scifi like Galactica. It was a single series show and I think had it been extended we might be saying different thing about it. This series introduces the characters and their universe but the show is very episodic and there is little arc over the whole series, the team goes on missions, stuff happens and they come back. Some of the stories are a little twee now but some are very good. The last episode is the only one that really highlights the potential of the show but it was too little too late and we'll never know the fates of the Wildcards now.The special effects in the pilot are terrible but the later shows it's really pretty good considering it was the 90s. The acting is all pretty good and is something that's stood up well. If you are into scifi and you'd like to see one of the best shows of its time then this is well worth watching. If you need a frenetic pace and a deep story you'll find this lacking. Kristen Cloke is still utterly gorgeous in this. Something that might matter to some people is that none of the episodes have subtitles.

I like this series when on TV. Made a point of not missing any part. I played these DVD's twice each. Still a good story, still a great series.

I rented this because the positive reviews. However the series did not work for me. It had dated unfavorably. I realsie special effects can date, but that can be overcome if the story caries the viewer along. Old episodes of Doctor Who demonstrate this. In the case of Space Above and Beyond the stories just did not feel weighty. A platoon of space marine pilots fighting unknown aliens across wormholes and star systems sounds like it has potential. But it just did not feel interesting or engaging.
