Frank Miller - there IS egg on your face!!
By NativityInBlack (119 reviews) from Birmingham , 02 Jan 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
Frank Miller needs to get another director to bring his visions to life, where Robert Rodriguez and Zack Snyder made brilliant adaptations of Millers graphic novels (Sin City and 300 respectivly), on this occasion Frank has gone it alone in the directors chair and the film feels....flat.
The characters are 1 dimentional and feel totally detatched from the viewer, and most of the time from each other too. You nver feel any attatchment to Spirit and dont particularly care what happens to him, further since we dont really see any citizens there isnt much concern for 'his' city either. the acting is ropey and even the stylised visuals feel tired and unimaginative, where dashes of colour were powerful in Sin City the whole film feels awash with blandness.
I highly recommend NOT seeing this film, 3/10 - total snooze fest- Was this review helpful to you?

By InstransigentSpirit (1 review) , 08 Mar 2013DVD arrived so scratched I couldn't watch it. Please, I don't expect this kind of service - especially regarding the work of a man like Frank Miller- Was this review helpful to you?

Not Sin City, Shame!
By Vince_M (47 reviews) from Darlington , 11 Feb 2013I'm a big fan of Sin City so I expected to like this too, but it wasn't a patch on the tales of Basin City. Dull and boring.- Was this review helpful to you?

Unique - beautiful visually and aurally
By a customer , 19 Jan 2013I really enjoyed this movie (although I admit I am something of a fan of graphic novels). The visuals are not merely 'pretty' as one reviewer disparagingly says. They are absolutely gorgeous, Eva Mendes never looked so beautiful, and there is a terrific flow and rhythm to the speech and imagery which give an engaging hypnotic quality to the movie. There have been many negative reviews of this film as there often are when a movie is visually innovative. People seem eager to show that they are not impressed by the visual spectacle (I am old enough to remember the sniffy early reviews that followed the release of Kubrik's 2001 in 1968). The Spirit is a far better film than the po-faced and brutal Sin City - a film I detest. Sin City takes itself far too seriously. The Spirit belongs firmly in the world of the comic book and uses that comic book combination of humour and seriousness to good effect. Jackson and Johansson as as the campy villain and villainess are reminiscent of the 60's Batman TV series. There really is no point in watching this film and expecting to see a taut thriller with a serious plot. Forget the overblown seriousness of recent Batman movies. This is a movie which captures the comic book essence without striving to puff itself up into something more 'important'. And no, Frank Miller does not need to get another director.- Was this review helpful to you?

overall disappointing
By a customer , 19 May 2012Disappointing
Could see what they wanted to do but poor execution, could of been very good. This is definately only for true comic book fans however saying that as a comic book fan this was more like an 80's comic book film with over kill modern techniques thrown in. Sorry to say this is Samuels worse film to date for me, and all of the acting was very wooden.
I liked the story just wasn't delivered right!- Was this review helpful to you?
