In what was only her fourth feature, the 19-year-old Isabelle Adjani comes remarkably close to conveying the desolation of a passionate older woman broken by her own determination. She plays Victor Hugo's daughter Adèle, who followed a young English soldier (Bruce Robinson) from Nova Scotia to Barbados, despite the fact that her love was unreciprocated. Working from Adèle's coded notebooks, director François Truffaut relies heavily on Adjani's crestfallen beauty and the oppressive majesty of Nestor Almendros's photography to suggest the heroine's agonising hope and incipient madness. Romantic, if intellectually detached, this fascinating character study is enhanced by the score Maurice Jaubert originally composed for Jean Vigo's L'Atalante.
As a film I only give this 3 stars but if you are a fan of Isabelle Adjani or Fran?ois Truffaut you could enjoy this film enough to see it.
It falls between a documentary and historical novel being neither one nor the other. It did not give enough explanation for me of the earlier relation between Adele and Lt Pinson to understand why she behaves as she does, what is there is told by her and we can not totally rely on what she says. We have seen her lie many times already and anyway it is from her subjective viewpoint.
On the other hand, there is not enough plot for an historical novel and there is not the normal character development or exploration that you normally get in a french film. Truffaut's theme seems to be how obsession can lead to self destruction.
There is a Hitchcockian cameo by Truffaut and since he wrote this based on her diaries it gives a cameo of her life.
