Told in an engaging collage of direct camera confessionals, flashbacks, roundtable discussions, and montages, Rob Reiner's THE STORY OF US, a sweet romantic comedy featuring solid performances by Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer, examines the difficulty of preserving marriage in America and the dual lives married couples often must endure. The "us" are Ben and Katie Jordan (Willis and Pfeiffer), a professional, and by all appearances happily married, suburban couple with two well-adjusted children, Erin and Josh; the "story," however, is that their marriage is actually crumbling at an alarming rate, a truth they endeavor to hide from their loving kids. Luckily, they can postpone the admission of dissolution because of the children's departure to summer camp, with the possibility that things will work out in the ensuing months. However, as time passes, tempers flare, Ben moves out, Katie meets a charming divorce at a cooking class, and, as the inevitable return of Erin and Josh closes to a week, there is no apparent hope of resolution. Will the two be forced to present their kids with an awful fact of life, or can they rediscover their passion for each other and renew their love

Director Rob Reiner here tried to make another When Harry Met Sally-style romantic comedy, but clearly forgot to hire someone capable of turning in a funny or moving script. Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer do their best as Ben and Katie Jordan, an unhappily married couple who opt for a temporary separation when their kids go off to summer camp. However, what could have been a sweet and amusing tale of mid-marriage crisis is a rather one-sided affair, with Willis cast as the good guy and Pfeiffer saddled with the role of whining witch. One wonders what they're doing in such a weak film, and why Reiner — who gave us such classics as This Is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride — should choose to direct it.
There's little sign of strain in the relationship Reiner shows us, so the ending will come as no surprise; but there's hardly any sign of pleasure, either, so the story is of the soporific bedtime sort.
What a 'nice' film. Not the sort of film that makes you sit up and go WOW! But the sort that makes you lie in bed and go mmmmmm. Anyone who has ever been in a long term relationship must watch this film!
And anyone who hasn't........stop watching films.... you obviously don't get out enough!!!
