    [Highly rated reviewer]

Decided to give this a go as I'm a huge fan of the noir films of the 40's and 50's.

Hadn't really heard of it before, but having seen it, I would recommend it to fans of the genre.

Kirk Douglas (in a minor role be warned) is very good as the alcoholic husband of Barbara Stanwyck (Martha Ivers), who have known each other from childhood.

Her real childhood sweetheart (Van Heflin) who was Stanwyck's nemesis and whom she had once tried to elope with returns to the small town, where thanks to her aunt Martha has become a multimillionaress.

Great dramatic piece with tension, intrigue and terrific performances from all the main leads.

A wonderfully dark and intense drama with each character bearing their own complex demons.

Stanwyck smolders at her withering best, Douglas sneers with intent, Van Heflin a rough diamond from the wrong side of town, Scott looking very Bacall like struggling at the lowest rung of society.

    Great stuff!

Surely Van Heflin was one of the most underestimated actors in Hollywood. I thought him splendid 35 years ago when I first saw this film and watching it again I find I haven't changed my mind.

All three protagonists were beautifully played - whoever cast them together should have won a medal - perhaps they did?

Barara Stanwick, Van Heflin and Kirk Douglas. Worth watching in a truly timeless classic.

  • DELIGHTFUL REDEMPTION MELODRAMA

    Rated - 4.0 stars
By a customer from TUNBRIDGE WELLS, ENGLAND , 20 Feb 2011
VHS quality transfer of a faded print that still manages to thrill with its melodramatic intensity. A tale of guilt and redemption and the unresolved secrets of the past that still have their affect in the present.

The performances from all concerned are excellent and help raise this above melodramatic cliché. As so often in Hollywood, when the movies are female-centered, the men have feet of clay and marry women with stronger wills than their own - that, or more money than they could earn on their own. Excellent characterization from a sometimes meandering noir screenplay that shows off Barbara STANWYCK to the same great effect as in Double Indemnity.

  • Great Drama

This was an extremely fine dramatic film, with a plot that was masterfully realised by a top cast, including Kirk Douglas in his first film, surprisingly at the age of 30. The cinematography was thrillingly menacing, with all the right traces of film noir. A great film.

Why isn't this film better known? Why isn't Lizabeth Scott a huge star? Why isn't life fair? Eveyone in this film is living on the edge and yet they all have a chance to show human warmth. One of my favourites.
