Do Not Miss Tom Clancy's commentaryBy a customer from London, UK , 15 Dec 2003
[Highly rated reviewer]This is a so-so spy thriller with Ben Affleck playing Jack Ryan, the character previously played by Harrison Ford. It is not really clear what the story is going to be for the first hour of the film then an event occurs out of left field and the pace really picks up. Morgan Freeman is very good.
If you have time, I really recommend listening to some or all of the hilarious commentary by Tom Clancy and the director, Phil Robinson. Tom opens his speech by complaining that the film makers ignored his book and then proceeds to point out every inaccuracy in the film, not just in respect of his book, but also in terms of what would really happen in the CIA or White House if these events occurred. The director is very good-natured and occasionally challenges cantankerous Clancy's assertions, but to no avail. A real bonus - if you do not always listen to commentaries, try this one, you might be surprised.

Slow paced, but ultimately goodBy a customer from Farnborough , 23 Feb 2012Great cast and great acting as you would expect from such a famous cast list.
The script, coming from a Clancy book, was top notch.
Despite all that though and the fact that the script had plenty of intrigue, it unfortunately lead to a somewhat slow paced film that sometimes failed to keep your full attention.
Things certainly started to pick up after the first hour, turning it into a good film after all.
Worth a watch.

An intelligent film.By a customer , 19 Sep 2011This is a film I have watched a number of times and each time I have thought it a fantastic watch. It is not a guns blazing, car chase sort of movie, but a thought provoking intelligent film about how things could go terribly wrong if the wrong sort of people got their hands on nuclear weapons.
Very enjoyable film, thought provoking and worth watching.By a customer , 06 Sep 2011Ive only just today watched 'The Sum of All Fears' and thought it very enjoyable, thought provoking, well made and immensely watchable. I also thought Ben Affleck played the Jack Ryan character very well and was believable in the role. In fact I found all the characters quite well cast in their roles.
After the film was finished I came to look to find out what others thought and I was so disappointingly surprised by the poor reviews. I dread to think what kind of film would get their interest. Also I think some of the reviewers hadn't actually watched the film as they get most of the story wrong. It wasn't Boston it was Baltimore and there were other wrong criticisms too numerous to mention.
And as far as the criticism about the romantic angle, I thought it again very believable. What healthy heterosexual adult male wouldnt have a romance or involvement with a girlfriend or wife in real life. The sterile all male characters in some films and books can, by their lack of friends and partners and other normal contacts, become two-dimensional flat characters. I like to see more of the outside life of the main characters in a story. There is nothing wrong with an emotional and love interest involvement in all-action stories , in fact I think they benefit from it and are more interesting as a result.
Not the worst, bit of action & entertainmentBy Tinkerbell64 (58 reviews) , 01 Aug 2011Ok, it was entertaining, but sadly Afleck doesn't do it for me, just not a strong enough actor, but he did have a good support cast. Have read some of the Ryan books and thought that it was a good action movie that wasn't meant to be taken too seriously, with a bit of an OTT idea running through it, these are best left in the books as they come across as more plausible.
