The first detective
By Dungbeetle (503 reviews) from London , 19 May 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
A down to earth telling of a true story. The detective division of Great Scotland Yard had only been operating for ten years when their best man was sent in 1860 from London to Wiltshire to solve athe killing of a child. Paddy Consodine gives him the grim determination required in a time when working class folk kept their distance among the new middle class. Always watchable George Costagon plays the interfering prejudicial local police chief and Peter Capaldi the concerned and respectful head of the grieving family. The filming does not prettify the scenes and tries to paint a picture of what those times felt like. Highly watchable. This tale and Wilcher's career were the basis for the first detective novels and plays.- Was this review helpful to you?

By 1of6 (118 reviews) from Aberdare , 02 Jan 2012I would have liked to have seen a series of Mr Whicher. It was smooth and not unlike a Poirot type investigation.- Was this review helpful to you?
