"The Tale of Despereaux" tells the story of several unlikely heroes: Despereaux, a brave mouse banished to the dungeon for speaking with a human; Roscuro, a good-hearted rat who loves light and soup, but is exiled to darkness; Pea, a Princess in a gloomy castle who is prisoner to her father's grief; and Mig, a servant girl who longs to be a Princess, but is forced to serve the jailer. Tiny and graced with oversized ears, Despereaux was born too big for his little world. Refusing to live his life cowering, he befriends a Princess named Pea and learns to read (rather than eat) books--reveling in stories of knights, dragons and fair maidens. Banished from Mouseworld for being more man than mouse, Despereaux is rescued by another outcast, Roscuro, who also wants to hear the tales. But when the Princess dismisses Roscuro's friendship, he becomes the ultimate rat and plots revenge with fellow outsider Mig. After Pea is kidnapped, Despereaux discovers he is the only one who can rescue her--and that even the tiniest mouse can find the courage of a knight in shining armor. In this tale of bravery, forgiveness and redemption, one small creature will teach a kingdom that it takes only a little light to show the truth: what you look like doesn't equal what you are.

Not the usual

Not what you've come to expect from a modern animated family film, which may put some off if you're after non stop laughs. My daughter (5) and i enjoyed it very much though. Lovely to look at, lots of excitement, and plenty to think about too. Slower pace than most but maybe that's not such a bad thing. Highly recommended.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes

Good animation following the traditional tale of a princess in need of saving and an unlikely hero.

Definitely one for the children, not an animation adults will love.

HARD GOING

Not bad, but seen better kids movies. Difficult to get into it both as an adult and for my 9 year old daughter. Struggled through to the end but not worth another watch.

Mouse style chivalry in an unpredictable tale

Well, I wasn't expecting this!! Glorious artwork and a *riveting* story. For once you truly don't know what's going to happen next. Reverses galore - not quite believable in places, but how brave of all concerned. Almost too many twists, but has a genuine European flavour: slices of darkness and a dash of ancient evil; yet properly balanced by the joy of life and love. Desperaux's ears are far too Dumbo but his bold curiosity - not to mention mouse-style chivalry - get my vote.

A beautifully made animation for children capable of thought, and for anyone who can still be moved by the powerful old stories.

Amazing film, will be renting again and again great for the family and great for a night in. Fun, charming and what a brave little mouse.

adult and children will enjoy watching this together.

Simple but fun games for younger children on the dvd.
