Not the usualBy a customer from Worthing, England , 30 Dec 2008
[Highly rated reviewer]Not what you've come to expect from a modern animated family film, which may put some off if you're after non stop laughs. My daughter (5) and i enjoyed it very much though. Lovely to look at, lots of excitement, and plenty to think about too. Slower pace than most but maybe that's not such a bad thing. Highly recommended.

A big misunderstanding?By studleydave (165 reviews) from Norwich , 02 Aug 2010A grey and desperate tale of sadness allowed to fester and control, and how a misfit mouse who dares to be different, remedies the situation.
With a contemplative and measured look at things, the story is cute and colourful.
I read quite a few comments that stated the film 'jumps', or goes back on itself, in order to introduce new characters, and tell it's story. I don't agree with this. It seems a little more segmented than most, but not disjointed. I can appreciate the directoral style adopted, and don't think it detracts from the tale being told.
Ratatouille this is not, though I can see the likeness. A sparkling Pixar animation it is not, but it has a more than credible appearance and style.

A fairly below average children's tale.By H0LLIE (198 reviews) from UK , 23 Jul 2010First of all, I am not familiar with the children's book upon which this is based. Secondly I am not a member of this films target audience. So I am talking from an impartial adult's perspective.
Myself and my mother are both big fans of children's films, particularly animated ones. But for me The Tale Of Despereaux just didn't quite cut it. Though the animation is beautiful, in particular the story book sequences, this just couldn't completely hold my attention.
The story is not very origional, just your typical captured princess and unconventional hero tale. The characters are all likeable enough but they are all slightly underdeveloped. The music is run of the mill, as is the direction. The voice cast is impressive, featuring Sigourney Weaver, Dustin Hoffman, William H Macy, Christopher Lloyd, Emma Watson, and Robbie Coltrane, but most of them speak without any real passion.
After the masterpiece that was Ratatouille it isn't nice to see rats portrayed so negatively, singling out one nice guy as the exception. And the depressingly cowardly mice don't do much for the reputation of their real life counterparts. I know that this is fiction, and I know that mice are timid blah blah blah. But I felt that Ratatouille did a fantastic job of clearing up some of the undeserved bad press given to rodents and I was hopong for the same from this.
So over all this was a bit of a disapointment, but still an ok kid's film, just not one I'm likely to watch again.
