Now that she's regarded as one of Hollywood's leading thespians, it's unlikely that you'll ever see Emma Thompson like this again. So make the most of this often hilarious comedy directed by Mel Smith and written pre-Four Weddings and a Funeral by Richard Curtis particularly the brilliant knockabout love scene with the gangling Jeff Goldblum. They work well together throughout the film, with her deadpan approach and his neuroses perfectly matched. The musical version of The Elephant Man is a master stroke and Rowan Atkinson's knowing send-up of his own image is both funny and generous. The plot wanders a little towards the end, but this is cosy, feel-good, if rather naive, fun.

    The tall guy

This is a predictable rom - com, but an enjoyable one none the less, from the early pen of Richard Curtis (pre Four Weddings and a Funeral). Its a good film to put on if you aren't in the mood for something that will challenge your brain.

    He's packing his trunk...

A funny fim from Richard Curtis, predating the mammoth success of Four Weddings and a Funeral. Jeff Goldblum is endearing as the struggling actor whose life turns around following a series of hay fever jabs, Rowan Atkinson is superb as his loathsome theatrical employer and Emma Thompson is both quirky and hilarious as Nurse Kate Lemon. All good life affirming stuff as a tangled situation is happily resolved.

Emma Thompson: Top of the Class

    • 03 Jun 2009

Thank heavens for Emma Thompson! The House of Lords may fall. Our MPs may act like lemmings, and poor old Susan Boyle is surely the British cultural icon we deserve… but as this week’s cinema release Last Chance Harvey proves, Emma Thompson prevails, a comforting reminder of Empire and order, a Britain where quality, common sense and self-deprecating wit trump tabloid fame and sleaze. She would demur, I’m sure, but Thompson is your mum’s idea of what a British film star Read more
