Busy version of one of Shakespeare's more proletarian comedies; the words in this case take second place to violent action and rioting colour.
Classic Shakespeare as it should be done and it hasn't dated so pay no attention to when it was made. Stunning locations, acting par excellence and the chemistry between Taylor and Burton at its fiery and passionate best.
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor are more famous for their antics off screen than on.
Here however they both make good - playing Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. In a cute and rare interview which seems quite staged, with rather unfunny jokes Elizabeth explains her trepidation in playing Shakespeare, as an actress with a fundamentally American accent along with the great actors of the British stage - including the excellent Michael York.
She re-shot all her scenes - and from the results it was well worth it. She plays the jokes well, and her character is both convincing and engaging - he holds her own against her excellent husband Burton, and the other English actors in the cast.
The film is engaging and entertaining, and the characters' well played, without the usual hamming-up, with just a few exceptions from some of the character actors.
Costumes are luscious, and Elizabeth Taylor positively shines. A good solid production, with good all-round performances. Good chemistry between Taylor and Burton, in a good film.
