Put this in the Maybe pile...

I am glad I got this movie out on DVD. I would not have wanted to waste a whole cinema trip on it. The photography was great, the dancers were great, the music was great; but I really felt that Sally Potter let herself and her movie down badly. If it had not been for her slow and tortured performance and the awful song at the end I would have wanted to buy this movie to keep.
The content was great but it could have been so much better. I would still recommend it, if only for the dancing of Veron and the others.- Was this review helpful to you?

(36)Watch only for Tango dancing
By a customer , 14 Apr 2013This was a good showcase for Argentinian tango dance sequences but there is little else to recommend. The dialogue was slow and the story was laboured. The film is shot mostly in black and white. I did not think this helped to lift the film as the colour clips were only for the story's abandoned film project.- Was this review helpful to you?

for the entertainment of the director only
By Casotu (1 review) , 08 Jan 2013Slow and self indulgent by the director. Turned it off after 30mins! Other members of the family wanted it off sooner- Was this review helpful to you?

Lovely, intense and multi-layered
By Marklf (1 review) , 17 Oct 2012I enjoyed the presentation in black and white with colour being used for exploring the actual film project that is within the story. This created an interesting dynamic for me about what was 'real' and what was imaginary.
I watched the fim three times altogether and enjoyed each viewing. On the third viewing I wondered if this was the film about Tango that was being discussed with the dance teacher in return for lessons and which, at times, seemed unlikely to be made because of the difficulties in the relationship.
I liked the numbering of the lessons - seemed to be about life lessons as well as Tango!
I wondered if there was some lesbian element ... in particular the closing sequence. I can't be specific or clear about this - just a spontaneous curiosity and a wondering.
I'm inspired to learn Tango! And also a bit in awe!- Was this review helpful to you?

Disappointing film.
By a customer , 04 Oct 2012Pretty dreadful, feels like a vanity project. There is a mismatch between leads - the director is much older than the male dancer, there is no chemistry that I could detect, which rather ruins the film.- Was this review helpful to you?

The Tango Lesson
By a customer , 30 Oct 2010If you like Tango or are interested in the philosophy of dance, this movie's for you. Lush photography, wonderful music and a real insight into the dynamics of partner dancing; especially the tango.
Don't expect much else in the way of a script, plot or story expostion, this is an homage to movement; made for dancers by a dancer, you'll feel excluded or like you've come home.- Was this review helpful to you?
