it holds together as a piece and keeps you engaged...it is original and strange and dark...it is not a masterpiece but it is certainly worth watching and well made...plot which conceals itself brilliantly and is the opposite of obvious like so much else

I thought this was a terrific film, and if not a tragi-comedy, then certainly Roman Polanski's portrayal of the strange character he plays was deliciously amusing in parts. He has a very expressive face which somehow doesn't move a lot but conveys a great deal, which is a sign of comic genius. Or if genius is too strong a word, then highly talented would cover it.

Polanski's character is at the heart of the story, which is deep and complex, and I have never seen him act so well. However, all the characters were equally superb - the beautiful Isabelle Adjani as the tragic suicide who haunts Polanski; Shelley Winters as the poker-faced, bad tempered old concierge (as thoroughly disagreeable as only French concierges can be);and the ancient but still wonderful Melvyn Douglas as the sinister landlord living 'on site'.

The apartment was typical of cheap old-fashioned apartments in Paris - gloomy, uncomfortable,and with terrible plumbing...the perfectly atmospheric setting for this story. If only more thrillers were like this one - laced with small flashes of humour- then they wouldn't be so boring.

Suprised that you have this in the comedy section,it aint funny. Remember the director's wife Sharon Tate was murdered? The film is total tragedy meeting the usual human response... it would be far more accurately categorized as horror.

Had not seen this film before and was expecting great things, but it looks and sounds very dated now. The atrocious dubbing was particularly distracting. A big disappointment!

I was not very impressed by this film that stars Polanski in leading role of a very confused young man. Some of its symbolism might have been interesting but it was definitely attempting to make a kind of great art movie maybe in style of Fellini etc. in my view. I watched it though but I wouldn't recommend it to bachelors.
