A Nightmare On Elm Street, the horror franchise that spawned dream-haunting, bladed-glove-toting serial killer Freddie Krueger, is set to receive the remake treatment, according to reports in Hollywood. Industry bible Variety reports that New Line, who were behind the 1984 original, have appointed Platinum Dunes to handle Freddie's makeover. It takes some determination to dumb down a movie as bare bones as The Hitcher. In its 1986 incarnation C Thomas Howell stops for the wrong guy - Rutger Hauer - who turns out to be a psychopath. He escapes, but Hauer is only just getting warmed up. He butchers a family a little further on down the highway and frames Howell for the killings.
