I went into the THING fully expecting to hate it after a lacklustre trailer that showed men as idiots and a irritating woman lead seemingly have the gift of seeing the (sequel) John Carpenter version (which I love) and second guessing everything. And although the cast of victims is interchangable and entirely unremarkable (except for the lead scientist who is so unemotional as to be almost comatose) the film midpoint actually manages to gather some of the tension of the original (remake) with some cleaver deductions. Not as suspenseful though. Whereas before the Thing would hide and creep about, in this more action driven film it 'explodes' out, grabs and attacks and generally plays predator. Clearly by Carpenter's version (which is referenced nicely as the camp is destroyed- still no explaination as to how you can cut your wrists AND your throat though!) the Thing decides to play it a little more cooly. The film 'ends' with the hero lead as you would expect but continues through the end titles to link with Carpenter's film. This is great, but the fate of these last survivors off screen should have been shown and been in the film, not as an add on. That all said, the film was better than expected, the female lead isn't the irritating 'Ripley' clone the trailer portrayed and is quite vulnerable and realistic (given the circumstances) and there's a nice power play mid film. The cgi and practical creature effects were very disturbing at times (the use of real heads in the mix etc) and gory with it. This is a more hardcore in your face version with some nice nods to classic horror and clichés. Plus the film expands in other unexpected areas which I won't spoil here and gives you something new towards the end. Scary? No. But I'm a bit jaded to such stuff. Icky, yes. Worth a rental.

I initially thought that this film was a remake as it was pretty much the same as the original only no where near as tense. It was only at the end that I realised it was supposed to be a prequel.

  • Not as good as the 80's version

Possibly may have enjoyed it more if I hadn't seen the 80's version which was brilliant. This film doesn't hold a candle to the 80's version. Still good though and well worth a watch.

  • Effects and lazy directing make this horror a let down.

Very suprised about the positve reviews here... this was terrible. I got this because my friend is a big fan of the original. She hated it too! A good concept, and loads of potential for a scary 'no sleep until dawn' evening. However completely ruined by choice of 'so over-done it's funny' effects rather than building any suspense. The whole point of the film is to guess which of the group is human and which is an alein in disguise. You never get the chance to guess because the film makes cannot resist breaking into yet another gross scene, going for the shock factor (and failing) rather than allowing the viewer to become even the least bit curious or jumpy. Give it a miss. Watch the original.

My goodness they certainly made a tense film here. I am a hardened horror fan and I found this a bit much for me! The creatures are horrific and scarey to the exteme, the effects are incredible. This is true horror at it's best. The director has done an amazing job. The characters are superb, and it was good to see where the thing originated from. I really enjoyed the 80's remake and this version is on a par with that. Be warned it may cause extreme nausea and possible palpitations!!!!

  • A very good sci-fi horror!

This is a very good film. I don't like modern horrors that seem to want to add as much blood and scenes that make you jump as they can that they forget to put some kind of a plot in. Thankfully this is not one of them. Despite being some blood and a couple of scenes that will make you jump, this is a enjoyable watch with a good story line. I never lost interest whilst watching The Thing which is a well made sci-fi horror.
