A complex and surreal work... a haunting first feature
Thirty-five years on, Third Part... can be read as a tragic thriller following the Polish resistance in WWII, an allegory of life under Commie rule (the film slipped past censors by chance) and a fable exploring the conflict between ideas, order and passion, the niavety of youth, and the parasitic intereliance of rulers and ruled.
Invigorating opening sequences introduce a world where bloody violence is shocking but regular. Following a bout of sickness and personal tragedy, Michal returns to the city to join the resistance. Already, traumatised, he is not prepared for the ongoing violence, and the story spirals into a Vertigo-esque nightmare of historical repetition and ghostly returns. The feverish logic of the plot can make it hard-going at times but heart-rending performances and thrilling camerawork make for a visceral experience, even as the (historically accurate) metaphor of Michal's cover work, giving blood to lice to produce typhoid vaccine, works on the intellect.
Reminiscent of the French new wave in its freedom of spirit and style, and the Czech new wave in its labyrinthian, surreal exploration of the dark areas of mind and soul, Third Part... is a frustrating but rewarding experience for those looking for something (still) fresh and challenging from a film.
I enjoyed it, just don't ask me what it was about! Definetly one to watch again. The typical person will hate this film, so read some other reviews before adding to your list!
