Rip Roarer

Weve all seen and maybe read the classic Three Musketeers but this version is by far and away the best of the lot. Action, bravado, and comedy all mixed in. The cast is superb with the 'right' mixture of classic actors hamming it up and even some comedy actors playing it straight. 2 hours of good solid funny entertainment to satisfy all ages.- Was this review helpful to you?

(16)Hilarious Musketeers
By Camby (6 reviews) , 16 Apr 2013This along with the sequal (shot at the same time) is one of the most fun and enjoyable films made. Silly, hilarious and great acting from an all star cast. There is always something going on in the background which you might not see the first time round, which makes for great repeat viewings. The fights are brilliant but not in the conventional way. They start of all professional swordplay then desend into kicking, punching and using anything that comes to hand. All in all a very enjoyable 1hr 45mins.- Was this review helpful to you?

All for one...
By Jennish (335 reviews) from Rye , 20 Aug 2012Richard Lester provides and exuberant, romp through 17th century France with his famous Dumas adaptations. Flashman author George McDonald Fraser's script is largely faithful to the story, spirit, and often the dialogue, of Dumas's sprawling tale. A rare instance when all star cast is both required and then able to deliver the performances. One of the greatest examples of how to film an almost unfilmable novel, capturing the atmosphere of boisterous roustabout fun, scandal, chivalry and adventure whilst streamlining proceedings. The script and direction not only preserve and amplify the humour of the original story, they add further subversive elements and laughs. Life isn't complete until you have seen this- Was this review helpful to you?

Still swashes successfully, after 36 years!
By a customer from Orpington , 28 Jul 2009This is a rousing, swashbuckling epic! It is very faithful to the original Dumas novel (which I have read!). The score is sweeping, which plucks at your heart strings and draws you into the action.
Richard Lester is a very good director, having success with The Beatles' Hard Day's Night, and another success with this film. It is very humorous, but what's good is that the humour doesn't take away from the drama. Michael York is great as a young D'Artagnan, Oliver Reed is great as Athos, and I will really miss him - film will never have another like him again. Christopher Lee is in another good villain role. He always seems to be the villain, but he said that he enjoys these roles. It seems that he hasn't suffered from this type-casting, compared to some other actors.
Charlton Heston is a fantastic Cardinal Richelieu, who embodies his character, and pulls off another grand performance. He is a true American legend in acting, and Hollywood has lost a great actor in the industry. Raquel Welch and Faye Dunaway are both very beautiful leading roles. They are both attractive in their own ways, although Raquel Welch is more the girl you would want to go out with, and the one you would want to take home to meet your mother! Faye Dunaway is more attractive, in the terms of being more of a seductress! If she could ever love, she lost that ability a very long time ago.
This is the first of two parts, cleverly shot in one whole chunk but broken down into the two instalments. As soon as you've seen the first one, you automatically want to see the second one.
Very enjoyable film, I guarantee it!- Was this review helpful to you?

Not Bad
By Sleepystujam (51 reviews) from Edinburgh , 07 Jun 2008Not exactly awe inspiring, the fight scenes have hardly been choreographed for months on end. You also never get to know any of the charcters. I've always felt rather annoyed watching any Richard Lester film, with his reliance on slapstick and characters in the background making witty remarks. however it's still fun to watch and see how many faces you recognise. Spike Milligan, for me, steals the show.- Was this review helpful to you?
