Most helpful review The Three Musketeers

  • One of the great silent classics from one of the greatest silent stars. Still impressive.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is one of the legendary Fairbank's greatest roles as D'Artagnan-----IMHO, only Gabriel Byrne ( so many years later, and more than probably 50 screen D'Artagnans later) came close to being the best to play the role.

This was a more serious than usual film for Fairbanks , and as long, nearly 2 hours, as a talking picture ( which were still 10 years away when this film was made). It showed him at his swashbuckling best-----and that's saying summat given the number of swashes he buckled over many years :)))))

It's an interesting aside that , PERSONALLY, I happen to think the best sword-fight on screen ( just beating Flynn/Rathbone in Robin Hood) involved Fairbanks' son , battling against the wonderful Ronald Coleman in the brilliant 1930s' version of 'The Prisoner Of Zenda'. So Fairbanks Jnr, whilst never achieving the legendary status of his illustrious silent screen father, has a special place in cinema history for me.

A must-see for all cinema buffs , especially afficianados of the silent era.

Fabulous movie! Great entertainment! I had heard of Douglas Fairbanks (senior) but had never seen one of his films and he was a magnificent D'Artagnan.
