Smart anti-Zionist movie demonstrating that great universal of human nature: That you become what you hate. Despite millennia of Jewish persecution, the founding of the State of Israel necessitated the suppression of Palestine.

Teaching practice in Palestinian/Israeli schools is shown as little more than political and sexual propaganda designed to brainwash Arabs that the United States is neither colonialist nor imperialist in its support for an economically-unviable state like Israel with apartheid-like internal politics.

Like the Maquis in occupied France, the Palestinians fight back in any way they can while simultaneously either contemplating suicide rather than a life under colonial occupation or collaboration. The psychological impact of such choices are deftly and subtly portrayed in this deadpan and ironically-comic agitprop. The dilution and dissipation of much of Arab culture and values in favor of Christmas, karaoke and disco dancing.

The only real problem here is a lack of characterization since the performers here act more as mouthpieces for political positions rather than fully-fledged characters. Nevertheless, it largely manages to avoid didactic polemicism and is an interesting companion-piece to the recent Lebanon (Levanon) (2009) and Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir) (2008).

It is a strangely engaging film. The first half carried a stronger story line and the ending was a series of observations that at their best were thought & visually provoking ... at their worst repetive indulgence.

The film engaged me and triggered my curiosity to learn more about Palestinians. Sad situations are softened with humour and the film has very funny moments in it. The film did not tug at my heart strings and I felt that the direction of the film was to place the viewer at a distance. In the film some of the characters silently watched certain events occur. I watched the snapshots of the caracters lives and it led me to want to know more about the background to the events. In my opinion there is no simple stance that can be taken as it is so complex. Before watching the film I did not know enough to have a view.

  • Interesting Palestinian movie

This film is quite touching, telling the simple tale of the directors parents starting in 1948. Impeccably acted and quite humorous despite the film being set in troubled Palestine/Israel. A real gem.

Well produced, captivating and independent, this journey through the life of a Palestinian family holds your attention, retains a sense of humour through troubled times and displays a touching portrayal of human relationships.

Amazing film. Humane, honest, funny. To call it anti-zionist, as some have, is to miss the point completely. Unless of course someone's experience can be an anti-statement simply by being a lived experience.
