Superb in every way
By a customer from Sheffield , 27 Jan 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a superb documentary I first saw twenty years ago, but only now released on DVD, to coincide with the Gus van Sant movie. Personally I much prefer this of the two.
Milk was the first openly gay elected official in the US, who also led the successful opposition to the repugnantly homophobic 'Proposition 6' - and proposal which had looked like a dead cert for victory until Milk began his campaign. Harvey Milk was murdered, along with the San Francisco Mayor, by Dan White, who managed to avoid the fullest penalties of his crime by pleading diminished responsibility due to eating too many twinkies!
The documentary charts Milks politicisation, from a right-wing closeted republican, to the egregious dynamo who wins the support of trades unionists and radicals. All of the 'key figures' are present in the film, including White, who comes across as a Travis Bickle character, but without the charm. The judicial systems corrupt manipulation of jury and process also comes ion for heavy criticism for the way in which it let White off the hook.
The film is mainly about Harvey Milks politics tho, not anyone else's. In particular his cry for lesbians and gay men not to hide, but to come out and proudly state their sexuality, so tat no one could again claim that 'all homosexuals were child abusers' and other such nonsense.
A superb film.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 08 Dec 2012After watching the film 'Milk', starring Sean Penn, I was intrigued to see the real Harvey Milk. 'The Times of Harvey Milk' is wonderful, emotional and an extremely educational documentary. Young Gay people of today should be made to see how a lot of the world has changed, in a relatively short time, all due to the likes of the extremely brave Harvey Milk. May he rest in peace !!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Emotional but brilliant
By JMBUTLER (1 review) , 20 Jul 2012Very emotive documentary about Harvey Milk, his campaign and his assassination. Made me cry multiple times. I'd definitely recommend that anyone interested in the Gay Rights Movement or LGBT rights watch this documentary as Harvey Milk's campaigns shaped our current society more than many people know. Rest in peace Harvey Milk, you've done a service for us all.- Was this review helpful to you?
