It took two major studios — Fox and Warner Bros, pooling resources — and two similar novels — The Tower and The Glass Inferno — to make this triple-Oscar-winning disaster movie. The fun comes from guessing which superstars will get fried to a crisp in the burning San Francisco skyscraper, ignited during the opening ceremony, and who will be saved by daring fire chief Steve McQueen. The big-name cast plays second fiddle to the blazing special effects, but the mounting suspense and outlandish rescue attempts fan the consistently entertaining flames.

Showmanlike but relentlessly padded disaster spectacular, worth seeing for its cast of stars, its sheer old-fashioned expertise, and its special effects.

I watched this fil shortly after "discovering" the coolest of filmstars, Steve McQueen. It's just your typical 'how are we going to get out of this' movie as far as plot is concerned, with the world's tallest skyscraper going up in flames due to shoddy work from the constructors; but with Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, Robert Vaughan amongst others, it's great fun watching and saying "Wait a minute, I recognise him..." every five minutes. "The world's tallest building is on fire. You are there on the 135th floor... no way down... no way out."

This Sporting Life: What Happens When Sports Heroes Act Up? Eric Cantona and Ken Loach. These are not names you would immediately put together. One is a multi-millionaire (surely?) ex footballer, revered by millons of fans; and French. The other is a proud socialist from middle-England (Nuneaton), who has rejected the big money offers; his films are admired but by a relatively small number of committed film buffs. What's more, Ken Loach is a dedicated supporter of Bath FC. I'm guessing there... Read more
